You can read the original article !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but it’s both so short and poor enough in quality that I’m going to post it in its copy-pasta’d entirety, and also to show my complete lack of respect to both crediting whoever wrote this in proper fashion and wanting to give them web hits:
(Spoiler alert: This story has some Game of Thrones spoilers and praises a Simpsons joke you’ve probably heard before.)
What to make of Jon Snow’s cruel dig at a red-headed member of the Night’s Watch on Sunday’s Game of Thrones ?
As the new leader of the Watch, Snow announces the need for someone to dig a latrine pit, and appoints a redhead named Brian (at least that’s how he pronounces it) as latrine captain.
“It seems like a good job for a ginger,” says Snow.
As out-of-nowhere insults go, it can’t touch the gold standard — the masterful Simpsons’ dig, “ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .”
But it must have stung redheads everywhere, because Snow is one of the most admirable characters on Thrones . When he makes a casual “ginger” zinger, it’s like the show itself has insulted those “kissed by fire.”
But let’s dig deeper. What we’re seeing here is Snow becoming a better politician. When he insults redheads, he also distances himself from Ygritte, his redhead Wildling ex, and demonstrates that his loyalty is to his men, not the Wildings. (His level of Wildling loyalty is especially questioned, in some circles, because of his mercy killing of Mance Rayder. But it probably isn’t in question anymore.)
Snow delivers the insult while in the process of carrying out a masterful keep-your-enemies-close power move. And following his !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
So Snow isn’t just throwing Brian under what the Westeros equivalent of a bus is. He’s also belittling his dead ex. And in the process making himself look better.
Jon Snow really is kind of a bastard. But he’s a smart bastard.
1. Someone needs to point out the Simpsons joke because I don’t see it. Unless he means South Park which had an episode generally about gingers which has worked its way into the culture of the show itself. So yeah you blew it before we even leave the spoiler warning, way to go there. Such writing, much excellence, wow (no I will never let that meme suffer the same fate of Ygritte/Jon/Robb/Cat/Joffrey/Ros/Robert/Renly/Drogo/Ned/Lysa, you know nothing Jon Snow).
2.Oh wait there’s the Simpsons joke, as out of the blue as he claims the joke to be itself and, uh, why is it here?
3. Yes let’s rationalize this off-hand comment by going through some sort of convoluted combination of grieving process and example of taking command and leadership, or, er, something.
Look, it’s just an off-hand comment on an HBO show that has had a prostitute cruelly shot to death, a man slowly poisoned to death under false pretenses of saving his life, a man having been cruely ritualistically castrated, a man having been cruely ritualistically castrated times eight thousand , and a man, his mother, his wife and his child all murdered on a wedding night. Oh yeah, and I think Jaime raped Cersei next to Joffrey’s dead corpse? Did that happen? My point is that if you’re offended by Jon making the ginger guy dig latrines, then maybe you should be asking for a refund on your HBO subscription.
This is a really excellent series too BTW, it’s basically Downton Abbey but with booze and Tommy Guns. Much more exciting. Many machine guns. Wow.
Anyway, if you’re trying to invent some rationalization for Jon’s anti-ginger attitudes through a combination of trying to take command, trying to get over a girlfriend and Cartman-style gymnastics you’re watching it wrong.
Also, I just can’t get over how poorly this article is written. It reads more like a transcript of how to get the old man in the cave to give Link the sword as written on a random GameFAQs post than it does an actual editorial worthy of publication. And you guys think Gawker is bad?

I don’t know, man. The analysis of Jon’s actions seems spot on, the outrage seems tongue in cheek, and its an excellent Simpsons reference.
